Text of letter from Department of Health 10/10/2001 in reply to Trentham Environmental Action Group letter 19/10/2001  and their letter to Sir Walter Bodmer 19/10/2001

10 October 2001

Dear Mr Lewis and Ms Asbury

Thank you for your letter of 19 September to Alan Milburn about overhead power lines and health and enclosing a copy of your letter to Sir Walter Bodmer. I have been asked to reply.

I note the points you have made about obtaining scientific advice. The National Radiological Protection Board's Advisory Group on Non-ionising Radiation is set up to provide independent, impartial and authoritative advice on important issues and its composition is changed from time to time to reflect the issue under consideration.

It is acknowledged that there is continuing research interest in the wider issues associated with electromagnetic fields and health and I think you will agree that there is considerably more awareness of these issues than in the past. The World Health Organization electromagnetic fields project which has been under way now for a number of years provides an important international perspective. We have supported this programme and continuing to do so.

I understand that the NRPB will be writing to you directly to address the detailed points you have made.

Yours sincerely,

George Hooker Radiation Unit Public Health Group
